Who are pirates?

The term porch pirate is used to refer people who steal packages from other people's homes. Many of these crimes are just crimes of opportunity.

Why worry about them?

It is estimated that 1.7 million packages are stolen or lost every day in the U.S., according to researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. As Amazon drives more shopping online, Prime members say they receive on average 51 packages a year, and one in three Americans report having at least one package stolen, resulting in $25 million of lost goods and services every day, according to C+R Research.

What are people doing to protect their packages?

Location

Securing packages in a safe space like a smart locker or a box with a smart pad lock to prevent theft.

Deterrent

Installing deterrent devices like security camera or smart door bells to discourage theft.

Why do we need a smarter solution?

Location method

Having a rather unsightly box/ locker that is present in the front of homes that is always there and also difficult to carry around when you move houses or apartments. Not to mention takes so much room outside your home when you do not have any deliveries to be made.

Deterrent method

Although the presence of security cameras and smart doorbells gives you ease of mind, the ‘pirate’s are not too bothered by them. If they want to steal your packages from your door, they will. You can clearly see from picture, it doesn’t help.

He lives in one of the up and coming suburbs in Pittsburgh. As he is a cyber security consultant for a hedge fund, he could be working late in the evening most days. As most stores are out in the city, he prefers to do his shopping online. His neigbourhood has had strings of package theft and he is scared for his own deliveries. His wife and kids are out of town for few weeks and doesnt have anybody at home to keep their packages safe after its being delivered when John is at work.

How might we devise a delivery eco- system that tracks deliveries and also provide people with a secure location to receive them?

Introducing resassur.d

resassur.d is a smart lock box that employs the latest materials and technology to create a hassle free experience for John to track and receive packages. With all the shipping updates available to him on the tip of his finger, he remains informed and at ease.

The lockbox is connected to the app to let John know when a delivery has been made and if a delivery could not happen, he is updated real time for him to take the appropriate action. The lockbox deters as well as prevents porch pirates from getting their hands on his packages.

resassur.d Smart Lockbox and Application

The advantage resassur.d lockbox provides over other hard-case boxes is that its light and can be collapsed to take minimal footprint. The motorized locking and unlocking allows for easy recieval of package from your delivery partner. The accompanying app tracks your deliveries through your email. It syncs with your email and collects all the delivery details and presents to you in an easily digestible format.
